Math 1107 Course Documentation
CJ Alverson
We will have two (2) in-class
examinations (called hourlies).
Your best
performance among these two will comprise 40% of your course grade.
Your second best performance
among these two will comprise 20% of your course grade.
We will have a comprehensive final
examination,
which will comprise
40% of your course grade.
The Course Total Score and Course
Letter Grade
The Course Total
Score is the basis of the Letter Grade assigned for the course. The CTS has a
maximum value of 100 points, accumulated as follows:
The highest of the
two hourly scores contributes a maximum of 40 points to the CTS;
The 2nd
highest of the two hourly scores contributes a maximum of 20 points to the CTS;
The Comprehensive
Examination score contributes a maximum of 40 points to the CTS.
The only letter grade earned in the
course is the letter grade assigned for the entire course. I do not interpret
any of the preliminary scores as letter grades.
An "A"
for the course requires a CTS of 90 or better;
A "B" for
the course requires a CTS of 80-89;
A "C" for
the course requires a CTS of 70-79;
A "D" for
the course requires a CTS of 60-69;
A "F" for
the course requires a CTS of 00-59.
Just remember the rule - 40/20/40
Each of the individual scores on the hourlies
and final are just that - scores. I do not assess grades until the end of the
quarter. The only grade for the course is the Course Grade. Moreover, do not
interpret any of the individual scores on a letter grade scale.
Make-up tests are only scheduled in advance
of the test in question, and only granted in cases of extreme need as defined
by Mathematics Department and KSU policies.
Make-up comprehensive examinations are only
scheduled in advance in the face of extreme need as defined by Mathematics
Department and KSU policies, or in the case of direct conflicts with other
scheduled exams.
I do not employ grading curves.
While we use a group approach in class for
learning purposes, only individual work will be used for grading purposes.
The idea here is to minimize unnecessary work
outside of class.
You will have the entire course period in
which to work on the hourlies. You will not be terrorized by pop quizzes or
burdened with assigned problems or homework. However, you are ultimately and
solely responsible for your individual performance in this class. Hence, be
sure to stay current in your class-work, and to work out problems on your own.
The web-site will provide complete,
timely documentation for the class sessions. However, do not view this
documentation as an alternative to actual active class participation.
