Calculators
This is not a
course in how to use calculators - your calculator is your sole responsibility.
The default choice is the Texas Instruments TI-83. Your machine will have to support basic statistics:
It must allow the editing of data;
It must provide the following summary
statistics - sample mean, sample standard deviation, sample percentiles (25th,
75th), sample median, sample minimum, sample maximum .
Your calculator will have a manual - use it to learn how to
use your machine. The proficient use of your calculator is your sole
responsibility.
Prerequisites
A recent algebra course will suffice - if your mathematics
skill base is more than one or two years old, you might benefit from a short
refresher course.
I assume and require
that you have the following
skills:
Basic numeracy - familiarity with real numbers, sign, fractions ;
Arithmetic - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, roots,
powers, polynomials;
Algebra - ability to manipulate symbols in mathematical expressions,
ability to read and to cope with mathematical expressions, ability to write
mathematical expressions.
Study
Habits
Attendance is
critical. I use an active learning approach and the active participation of the
student is necessary. You alone are responsible for gaps in your knowledge due
to absences.
Individual note
taking is essential. The website serves as an aid to learning. Take additional
notes to enhance your learning. Don't waste time re-writing what is already
available on the website.
